If you’ve been paying attention, you might have figured out who won the cover, but shhhhhhhh! Please don’t share so we can do a big reveal! We’ll be announcing the winner soon – on June 1st with our digital edition of The One Bride Guide (print will be delayed a little bit due to restricted distribution channels). Thank you everyone for the amazing number of votes! It was so fun.

Behind The One Cover: Knolle Farm & Ranch
By The One Staff, Photos by Resendez Studios
Cover shoots are one of our favorite things to do with The One Bride Guide. The February issue is always an interesting one, in that we never know what we are going to get! We have to plan each issue well in advance. For the February issue, this means everything gets put together over the holiday season, which is usually difficult.
Our February 2020 cover we got to work with a bunch of people we had been dreaming of doing more with, after experiencing some events with them: Angela Resendez of Resendez Studios, Beth Knolle of Knolle Farm and Ranch, Christina Treviño with Blow Dry Therapy and Robin Dudley of Southern Florista, plus some other generous contributors like Christina Tidwell from All About the Dress and Ashley Kenney of A. Kenney Jewelers. Between Angela’s calming demeanor, Beth’s unmatched service, Christina’s humor, and Robin’s ability to pull together gorgeous things at a moment’s notice, we knew we could relax. This shoot was going to be a fun one.
“When I sat down with the lovely team at the One Bride Guide,” Angela Resendez recounts, “we threw some ideas around for this photoshoot, and the one that really stuck out to us was the ethereal theme. The word “ethereal” has always been one that I love to use when describing artwork that I love which has sortof a dreamlike quality. Who doesn’t want to have a wedding which feels like a dream? Right away, we knew that we had to use Knolle Ranch because of their gorgeous trees-a-plenty. The dripping moss on their trees was a must-capture because it seemed so surreal and unlike anything I have ever seen around the Coastal Bend.”
April Ames was our gorgeous model for our ethereal shoot and looked like and angel. April is a Registered Nurse Case Manager at Driscoll Health Plan. She was a natural in front of the camera. The only problem was getting her to stop admiring the enormous rock on her hand so we could change her pose!
Ashley Kenney of A. Kenney Jewelry trustingly loaned us some extremely valuable pieces for the shoot, all of which had rich history. Our bride’s ring held a rose cut diamond believed to be from the 1800s. The ring was originally bought at a Paris auction and made it’s way to Florence, Italy, where it caught Ashley’s eye from the window. The tiny shop was off the Ponte Vecchio and was the biggest and finest rose cut diamond she’s ever seen. Ashley suspects the diamond was most likely taken from a crown or scepter at some point! The 9 karat gold, cross necklace was a hand-made piece by Ashley Kenney which started as a vintage stick pin. Ashley transformed the cross pin into a necklace and hand-picked all the pearls, taking quite awhile to find perfect matches to make the necklace. The earrings were hand made, vintage opals with gold leaves surrounding, from a 50’s era estate. We are always so blessed to get such unique pieces from A. Kenney (and a little freaked out that we take this priceless jewelry to remote locations).
We fell in love with several gowns from All About the Dress in Victoria, TX, but our winning choice was a Private Label design (number 55008). It had drama, was flowy & ethereal, had interesting texture and lace, and was perfect for our theme. Plus it fit April perfectly! We love how the bottom of the dress on the cover shot mimics the top of the treeline in the distance.
Another group we’d been dying to work with was the team at Blow Dry Therapy. We’d been chatting with them at the bridal fairs and finally got Christina Treviño and her team to come on board with The One, as well as help with the shoot. Blow Dry Therapy styled April’s hair in natural waves and expertly applied makeup which brought out April’s best features.
Our gorgeous bouquet was designed by Robin Dudley of Southern Florista using unique silk flowers. The funny thing is that Robin didn’t tell us she was using silk flowers. We probably would have thought it wouldn’t look as good as fresh, but she did such a great job, we didn’t even notice they were silk until we inspected up close! Well done Robin!
This particular photo shoot team was all about joy. We had April sending us into fits of laughter with her impersonations and sound effects, Beth was wowing us with her expert, off-road driving and cow-patty-clearing skills (talk about service – you know Beth likes you when she’s willing to toss dried cow manure out of the way for you!) This was the first Bride Guide shoot for our sales lead, Emily Rodriguez, even though she’s modeled and worked countless shoots herself. Emily kept us laughing and full of joy all day as well. And we send big thanks to God she didn’t fly out of Beth’s off-road vehicle.
“To top it all off,” Angela says, “the night ended with a fabulous sunset that we were hoping for – over the water and near the cutest chapel across the pond. I really had so much fun working with The One Bride Guide team, the makeup artists, our model, and the owner – we were laughing half the time and creatively brainstorming the other half of the time. All of this combined with the amazing dress and jewelry, I couldn’t have asked for a better team or photoshoot!” Well said Angela! It was a fun day and we lucked out because it was super cold and rainy just one day before! The shoot had glorious weather and we bonded with new friends, which might be the best part. Thank you
Behind The One Cover: Avant Garde
/ˌaväntˈɡärd/: French: Literal meaning “Advance guard”
Work that is inventive, futuristic, or revolutionary with respect to art, culture, or society.
As an inspirational concept, Avant Garde, can lead many different directions. After all, the very term invites you to experiment and step out of bounds into the extraordinary. Our interpretation of this concept focuses on taking traditional wedding elements and re-imagining them as unique artistic objects, beautiful sculptures that would surround the bride, add depth and texture to the environment, and stretch the creative muscle of our fabulous wedding professionals.
We focused our inspiration further by looking to an icon of French baroque high fashion,
Marie Antoinette, and giving her decadent aesthetic a contemporary, minimalist twist.
This influence is most evident in the outrageous, gravity defying updo crafted by the ever-so-talented Erica Hardy, who used every skill in her arsenal to weave, craft, color, and concoct a fabulous hair sculpture, complete with a suitably non-traditional veil, and topped off with a gorgeous plum organza flower by Therese Martinez of Posh & Posey Paperie.
This was our first time working with Therese, and we were absolutely thrilled with the results!
We have seen other marvelous flower creations from her before, but for this shoot, we wanted something uniquely elegant and ethereal, so we asked her to create one-of-a-kind, layered and translucent flowers in a palette of fall jewel tones to serve as a rich contrast against our monochromatic, industrial backdrop at the Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center. A special thank you to Neil Fox for all his work getting the Ortiz Center ready for us!
In juxtaposition to the textile flowers, we wanted elements of natural florals. For this, we knew there would be no one better than the team at Always in Bloom to take our abstract ramblings and create something magical and exquisite. They did that, and more! Donna and Michelle (and several wonderful assistants) created a swirling floral vortex installation, a true feat of artistry and skill. They also took the traditional idea of a bouquet and made it wearable art. The exquisite arm bouquet is designed with sumptuous textures like wispy copper plumosa, burnt orange strawflower, dry foliage and miniature berries.
With the many sculptural and fascinating creations by our artists, we wanted to maintain balance by keeping the bride’s attire simple and unadorned. The Oslo bridal jumpsuit by Justin Alexander Signature was the perfect counterpoint of simplicity. We completed the look with a voluminous cape and satin floral pointed heels for a dash of drama. A special thank you to Christina from All About the Dress for providing our modern bride with this tailored, minimalist look. (see Christina’s wedding spotlight pg 31)
Our lovely model, Frances Lee, who is quickly moving up in the world of fashion modeling, was the perfect fresh face for this sartorial vision. Frances brought contagious energy and enthusiasm to the set. Her classic beauty was intensified with gilded eyes and garnet lips by Malorie Jones of Hair and Makeup by Malorie. The jewel tones on her face were echoed in the precious jewels that punctuated her ensemble. As always, A. Kenney Jewelry is ever so generous in their offerings. For this vision we were provided with standout vintage pieces in breathtaking amethyst, plus a very special ruby and European cut diamond navette ring.
This shoot was a team effort and an incredible collaboration between artists. We are humbled and grateful to be able to create alongside such talented and creative individuals! Many thanks to the entire team for their energy, time, and passion for creation!

Behind The One Bride Guide Cover: Marine Dream
By Leslie Castro of Deux Boheme Photography
What a dream!
I was absolutely elated when I received the news that we would be photographing the summer cover on a sailboat! The news sent my ocean loving heart a-flutter!
Many thanks to Harrison’s Landing for allowing us to live out our nautical daydreams on the Nell Betty II. Our skilled captain, Pete Meyer, sailed us masterfully and confidently despite the less than perfect weather conditions. Special thanks to our skiff captain Geoff Whirty, who gave us a secondary angle to capture the full scenic beauty of our bay voyage!
This shoot was certainly one of our more challenging productions with many moving parts (including the setting), heavy fog, unstable footing, and a few wardrobe obstacles… but we had an amazing crew that helped all of the twists & turns feel like smooth sailing!
We began styling the visual direction for this marine daydream with a special dress in mind, the Lillian West ‘Shooting Star’ gown, an airy creation with bell sleeves, delicate gossamer layers and a trail of beaded stars throughout. The gown was simple but unique, and the right amount of whimsy to soften the angular lines of the setting. Our stunning dress was provided by All About the Dress in Victoria. We are always so grateful for their extra effort in attaining special and exquisite gowns. This dress in particular was a bit out of reach, and it miraculously came available at the very last minute!
We complimented the dress with a silver engagement ring from A. Kenney Jewelry and elegant statement earrings by Kendra Scott, specially selected from their newly-launched bridal line.
The bride’s look was completed with bare feet, and a bouquet made of white stargazer lilies wrapped with a silver rope as a nod to the setting. The white ‘star’ florals were echoed in the garland and surrounded by lush greenery. The gorgeous florals and special on-site installation was provided by H-E-B Blooms. Starla Dunlavey and her team are always so efficient and generous with their time and talent, and a joy to work with!
Of course, all of those beautiful details can’t come alive without our gorgeous models! Sean and Evan Hoelscher happen to be newlyweds (see spotlight pg. 18), were absolutely picture perfect, and two of the bravest, most sure-footed models we’ve had the pleasure of working with! Much appreciation to our beautiful couple for their time, energy, and absolute trust!
Our lovely bride, Evan, has natural beauty which was enhanced by the skilled hands of Malorie Jones, owner of Hair and Makeup by Malorie. It was absolutely mesmerizing watching her artistry firsthand when creating a romantic braided updo, and applying classic touches for a perfectly natural bridal beauty look.
Our groom, Sean, was truly adaptable and kind. We are ever so grateful for his flexibility and ability to meet every challenge with a smile and a helping hand, even as we were faced with trying to source a last-second suit for him due to the original suit being several sizes too small. The One’s owner, Monica Sawyer, came to the rescue! She drove out to the Island mid-shoot to bring us her husband Ryan’s assortment of suits to select from, one of which was a great fit and a perfect navy blue Kenneth Cole suit from Men’s Wearhouse. The groom’s look was finished off with a preppy bow tie from Ryan Gray’s collection (Ryan is the other half of Deux Boheme), and Sean’s own oxford brogues.
Many thanks to all of the team and contributors! We are so grateful to everyone who made this unique experience possible, and all of the support and assistance as we worked through rough patches and the foggy day. Special thanks to Raquel Espinoza, who assisted with many elements and
was a joy to work with.
All hands were definitely on deck! and we are ever so grateful.
