The Ultimate Wedding Dress Guide: A-Line Dresses
Shopping for a wedding dress can be a mixture of excitement and dread for some brides. There are so many styles of dresses and Pinterest boards galore make it even harder for a bride to say yes to the dress. To make things easier for all you blushing brides, we are going to take you through all the different wedding dress silhouettes so you all can be more prepared when shopping for the perfect dress. So let’s start out with the basic and most classic of silhouettes, the A-line.
The A-line silhouette can be seen in fashion from the Elizabethan era all the way to the 1950’s when the fashion icon Christian Dior created collections focusing on the shapes of the letters H,Y, and of course the A. After Christian Dior’s death, his successor Yves Saint Laurent created his own style of A-line dress that would eventually transition to the baby doll dress that was really popular in the 60’s.
This style became more popular throughout the 20th century but disappeared briefly in the 1980’s when streamlined silhouettes were on trend. Now the A-line silhouette is more popular than ever and can be seen in all types of clothing but especially the wedding dress.
This silhouette is in the shape of an A, hence the name, A-line and features a fitted bodice to highlight the smallest part of the body and flares out beautifully to cascade towards the ground. An A-line wedding dress can be flowy or structured.
Whether you’re pear shaped, long and lean, or petite an A-line dress would be suitable for any bride. Since the A-line silhouette is extremely flattering for all body shapes it’s no wonder that it’s a classic silhouette that will never go out of style. Classic beauties, Anne Hathaway, Kate Middleton and Angelina Jolie all had A-line wedding dresses for their big days.
You might think that A-line dresses work for only traditional weddings. But this type of dress would be suitable for a laid back beach wedding too!
A-line dresses come in all different varieties. You could have a sexier strapless A-line dress with beautiful embellishment or a more demure A-line dress with lace sleeves and a long train.
The A-line silhouette also has a modified version for brides who want to accentuate their curves even more for their wedding day. A modified A-line is fitted in the hip area instead of the waist but still flares out to create an A-shape. This modification to the traditional silhouette is also very flattering to all body shapes.
