Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Today many brides are working the old, new, borrowed, and blue items into their wedding as tokens of good luck. It has become a popular tradition but some brides are unfamiliar with the meanings behind the items. This tradition comes from the Old English rhyme “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe”. The modern day bride has dropped the idea of a sixpence in your shoe, which once stood for financial security.

Here’s the individual meaning of each item brides are using today:

  • Something old- a symbol of continuity within the brides family and past
  • Something new- a symbol of optimism for the future and new life the bride and groom will share
  • Something borrowed-a symbol of borrowed happiness, usually taken from a happily married couple
  • Something blue-a symbol of love, modesty, and fidelity
