Sticky Subjects: Wedding Songs
There are some wedding songs that are just overplayed, plain and simple. They are no doubt romantic and beautiful, but also a dime a dozen; practically every wedding has “Bless The Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts as their first dance song, or “In My Daughter’s Eyes” as the mother-daughter song. No doubt all of the over-played songs are positively gorgeous and some of my favorites but they’re still rather generic. Everyone has heard them! So I personally made it my mission to hunt down some less popular but equally brilliant wedding songs with a twist (because I can’t do anything simply). The songs have to meet the criteria of “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue” in order to make our wedding song playlist on the blog. Here are the songs I’ve chosen, which are linked to Youtube for your viewing pleasures. I hope you enjoy them!
• Something Old: Daddy-daughter dance. Let the tears flow…now!
“Bridge Over Troubled Water” –Simon and Garfunkel
“Your Joy” –Chrisette Michele (not so old but the perfect song)
“Slipping Through My Fingers” –ABBA
• Something New: All right, I went absolutely nuts with this category! I found so many beautiful “new” songs for a first dance, it was overwhelming; some of them are by newer artists, others I’ve just never heard on the wedding circuit before.
“Even Now” –Dashboard Confessional
“18th Floor Balcony” –Blue October
“Here I am” –Leona Lewis
“Keep Holding On” –Avril Lavigne
“Smother Me” –The Used
• Something Borrowed: This was a tricky one; how to incorporate something borrowed into a wedding song. But then I came to the conclusion that covers are just technically borrowed songs! The songs I have listed below are covers from people we found on the Internet of beautiful untraditional love songs.
“Hanging by a Moment” –Lifehouse (cover)
“When You Can’t Sleep At Night” –Of Mice and Men (cover)
“Hazy” –Rosi Golan and William Fitzsimmons (cover)
“Everything I Do” –Bryan Adams (instrumental piano cover)
“Fade Into You” –Mazzy Star (acoustic cover)
• Something Blue: The color blue in a wedding represents love, loyalty, and fidelity. I employed the help of a few of my friends, and these are their favorite love/romantic songs. Untraditional and extraordinary!
“Suteki Da Ne” –Rikki
“Anything for You” –Ludo
“Your Guardian Angel” –The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
“Carrying Your Love With Me” –George Strait
“I Just Do” –Dear and The Headlights
Love is wonderful, simply put. Now to go add all these songs to my iPod! Happy listening my friends.
