Questions to ask your wedding day hairstylist

Finding a good hair stylist is key to a wedding! Your hairstylist will be the one that will make sure that your hair flows perfectly with your dress and stays in place for all the partying that night. It’s your night and the last thing you want to worry about is looking back at pictures at a disaster of a hair-do.

I interviewed hairstylist Sarah Bensley, a long time friend and the one who will be doing my hair on my big day! I asked her questions that all brides need to know in preparation for their big day.

Tell us about yourself?

A: I grew up in Portland, TX and moved to Austin as soon as I graduated. I started doing hair in 2012 and I’m extremely passionate about my job, and so grateful that I could find a career in such a fun and exciting industry. This year I moved into a suite in North Central Austin, so now I’m running the show. I get to be my own boss and make sure my clients have the best possible experience.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

A: I love hair! I love coloring hair, I love cutting hair, and I love styling hair. I am so lucky to get to be creative every single day, and the chemistry behind making hair beautiful fascinates me. I also adore my clients, they are all so wonderful and I really get to know them on a personal level.

What’s your favorite part of a wedding?

A: The excitement of such a special day for the bride and her family and friends, you can really feel all of the love in the room. Everyone is so happy to be there and dressed to kill. I get so much joy from making a bride feel like a princess on her special day.

What’s in right now and what’s out, what are the top trends?!

A: Trending now is the soft and romantic updo’s. The kind of messy, tousled texture that is perfectly undone. And of course, the classic looks never go out of style.

What do suggest not to do before the wedding?

A: No drastic changes right before the wedding! Planning a wedding can be stressful, but don’t take it out on your hair. If it’s already a longer style, just continue to have it trimmed at least every 8 weeks so that it stays healthy. If it’s a good idea now, it’ll be a good idea after the wedding. And ALWAYS have a trial run with your stylist before the big day so that you and your stylist know you love it.

What’s your favorite product for a updo?

A: Kevin Murphy’s Doo.Over is a dry shampoo with great hold. It will add some amazing volume and texture. ALSO Phytolaque Soie is AMAZING, my favorite hairspray ever. It’s a buildable lacquer so your finish can be light or strong hold, and it’s always shiny.

Do you prefer an updo or hair down?

A: It depends on the whole look. I take into account the neckline of the dress, accessories, veil and the length of the bride’s hair.

What should a bride look for in a hairstyle and hairstylist?

A: You want to find someone who shares the same aesthetic as you, everyone has their own unique style and you want to find someone that will complement yours. Bring different photos of what you like on the day of the trial run so that your stylist will have an idea of what you like and you two can collaborate to find the look the personally suits you.

Where do you find your wedding inspiration from?

A: There are a ton of awesome bridal blogs like the One Bride Guide that I am constantly inspired by. Pinterest is also an amazing platform to browse and save looks that you love!

Are there any hair styles you love?

A: I love the messy, romantic updos that are trending right now. Nothing that is too sleek and perfect.. Reminiscent of the Renaissance in a way.

Should a bride bring anything to prepare before going into their appointment with you, rather it be the trail run or day of?

A: Trial run for hair and make up is super important! Bring accessories you’d like to wear or a veil, so you can really see how it will come together the day of. On the big day make sure your hair is clean!

Do you prefer hairpieces, veil or accessories?

A: I love hair pieces! It adds something special. Flower crowns are popular right now, and I also make crystal hair accessories that are great for boho brides.

Tips for Brides

A: Stay calm and enjoy your special day. Don’t be afraid to say exactly what you want from your stylists and vendors or anyone that is helping. Take deep breaths when you begin to feel stressed and try not to sweat the details. You’ve put in all the work up until this day, so relax and have fun.

Tips on how to make a hairstyle last longer

A: As long as it’s secured properly it should be ok, but it’s always nice to have a backup can of hairspray and a few extra pins. No head banging or whipping your hair back and forth! Also, hug wide! Everyone is going to want to hug and congratulate you, so grab them by the shoulders and tilt your head out to the side to make sure no one smooshes or snags your do.
