Painted Memories: Live Wedding Paintings With Angela Resendez

There are many ways that brides can reminisce their big day. Most (if not all) have a professional photographer capture every loving moment during the celebration. But what’s a unique way to capture a moment in time during your wedding? You can hire Angela Resendez to paint a portrait LIVE!

What is your art background?

I have been involved with art for what seems like forever. I was self-taught until college where I got my Associate’s Degree in Studio Art and then Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi where I got my Bachelor’s in Fine Art with an emphasis in painting.

What kind of paintings do you do?

My specialty is oil paint, but I also paint in watercolor and acrylic.

What are some of your art accomplishments?

I had a solo exhibition called Into the Storm at the Art Center earlier this year and I have won awards in various competitions that I have entered.

How does it work to book you?

I usually communicate with couples via an inquiry form on my website or by phone to find out what they are looking for. Once we confirm their preference for a studio or live painting, I send a contract with a list of services and payment schedule.

Do you finish the painting at the wedding or do you start and finish it later?

It really depends on the level of complexity and what the couple is looking to include. If they want something more realistic, I will likely need to rework the painting back in the studio. However, I have completed pieces by the end of the event. It’s usually a lot looser and more vibrant than the work I do when I finish on site due to the nature of painting live.

Where do you like to set up your work station at a wedding?

The location also depends on what the couple and I discuss wanting a view of in their painting. Usually, I need a space about 5×5 feet, not too close to anything else with a clear view of what I will be painting. Usually this is the first dance, but it could be another scene too, if the couple wanted a ceremony scene instead.

Do you choose what moment you want to paint or do you work with the couple?

I work with the couple and I give them suggestions of what could be painted in order to let them have some say in the final product. However, if there are artistic elements with regard to composition that I see when I arrive that need to be altered, I might adjust where my workstation is.

Anything you want brides to know?

It’s always best to book in advance since I am a photographer as well as a painter.

It’s awesome that you talked about how you could make your wedding extra special by getting a live wedding painting. My fiance and I want to do something unique for our wedding day. We’ve heard about live-paintings, but we’ve never seen one, and after reading your piece, we fell in love with the idea! We appreciate your idea about getting a professional painter to paint a portrait of your wedding day.
