Wedding Gowns 101

Finding the right dress can be stressful and overwhelming. It’s important to figure out which style of gown you prefer over others, and which one best suits your body type, before heading to the bridal shop. With so many wedding dresses out there you might not be sure what the different types are. Here’s some wedding gown terminology to help you get a jump-start on the process.

Types of Silhouettes

A-line

The A-line or princess dress has no marked waist and flows from the shoulders down to a flared skirt, creating the “A” shape.

Ball gown

These gowns are normally quite formal, reminding you of Cinderella. The bodice is fitted and the skirt is very full.

Empire

Empire gowns have a high waistline that starts right under the bust. It then flows to a skirt that can flow freely or be more fitted.

Mermaid

As the name indicates, the mermaid dress hugs against the body then the gown flows out beginning near the knees. This style will definitely show off your curves!

Sheath

The sheath or column dress has a shape that follows close to the line of the body. This design can fall straight down from the neckline to the hem. This type of dress will not allow for many body flaws.
